Essential Flamenco Guitar: Volume 1
by Juan Martin
Publisher: Mel Bay
140 pages

I’ve been a long time fan of Juan Martin’s other book, (Amazon: Solo Flamenco Guitar, CD, and DVD: Vol. 1) which are graded flamenco solos with a great DVD. But this method book, Essential Flamenco Guitar, gives a more in-depth look at the various aspects of flamenco ranging from technique to the types of dances. The book also has a great learning concept for teaching the individual elements of the music which then leads up to a solo piece. In other words, you digest the technique and music in small exercises and by the time you get to the piece you are good to go.

All of my best classical students played a little flamenco early on, I think it develops an excellent right hand finger stroke (the knuckles have to be high enough for rasgueado) and it’s also a fun way to develop other techniques and chord/scale knowledge.

I give this book two thumbs up, and as I said, I also like his graded solos. Great for any player from student, hobbyist, to working guitarists and teachers.

From the publisher:

This book and accompanying video provide a thorough introduction to flamenco guitar. What are the essential elements and techniques of flamenco guitar playing? How does one capture the real essence of authentic flamenco guitar? These are questions that Juan Martin, celebrated virtuoso flamenco guitarist and teacher, addresses in this first book of a projected three-volume series. The method is designed for the complete beginner and requires no prior knowledge of the guitar or flamenco music. It also provides invaluable insight and material for more advanced players who want to capture the essential sounds, rhythms and emotional power of true flamenco. The series begins with in-depth demonstrations of how the basic building blocks of flamenco guitar technique are used in actual flamenco music. The material then progresses to a detailed exploration of the individual rhythmic forms – the palos. In this book, the fundamental palos of Solea and Alegrias are presented to emphasize the basic rhythms and provide examples of falsetas – the melodic passages. Martin then shows how to apply these when collaborating with a dancer and singer. The music is transcribed in standard notation and tablature (cifra), and the two DVDs contain over 3.5 combined hours of explanation and demonstrations. The first DVD provides a detailed introduction to basic techniques, using examples of authentic flamenco to show these techniques in action. The second DVD progresses to demonstrations of the Solea and Alegrias, including music for the soloist and the guitar accompanying the dancing and singing.

  1. Note that the paragraph “from the publisher” that you have provided above is the wrong one, it is referring to the other publication “Play Solo Flamenco Guitar with Juan Martin Vol. 1”.

  2. J.Martin’s works and those of others like J. Serranos, M. Granados, or even O. Herrero are very interesting in that they usually are based material that comes from the masters(i.e.: Montoya, Maravillas, Ricardo, Sabicas etc.). They are particularly of interest to those who have a strong classical guitar technique base and can avoid all the ergonomic errors inherent to the flamenco approach to the guitar. But a word of caution: if you dont have that base avoid overpracticing the material and techniques introduced in all those so called methods. Chances are lesions to tendons, back muscles etc. will apear much quicker than your mastery of the material and falsetas.
