Rafael Aguirre Performs Gran Jota by Tarrega

Rafael Aguirre performs Gran Jota by Francisco Tarrega (1852–1909). This comes via Aguirre’s YouTube channel. Great performance with all the drama and virtuosic displays associated with the piece. Gran Jota is a virtuosic work based on the lively traditional jota folk dance of Northern Spain, Aragon. The piece is a series of variations that showcase advanced guitar techniques from shifts in texture, rapid ornamentation, and percussive effects such as tamburo.

As Aguirre mentions, “I am delighted to share Francisco Tárrega’s “Gran Jota” with you—a piece that showcases the full virtuosity of the guitar and captivated me as a child, inspiring me to pursue a career as a concert guitarist. My thanks to the Hotel Santa Catalina in Las Palmas for their kindness.”
