Born João Teixeira Guimarães in Pernambuco, Brazil, he became known for blending traditional Brazilian folk rhythms with classical guitar techniques. His compositions, especially Sons de Carrilhões, remain important in the classical guitar repertoire and influenced later Brazilian musicians and composers.
