Sasha Savaloni Plays Schubert Songs

Iranian-Scottish guitarist Sasha Savaloni plays three beautiful arrangements of lieder, Liebesbotschaft, Ihr Bild, and Am Meer by Franz Schubert (1787–1828). The arrangements are by Savaloni except for Liebesbotschaft which is one of six period arrangements of Schubert by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856). This comes via Open Strings Berlin and their Youtube with audio by Iain Coleman. Always great to see more nicely directed videos by the brilliant Open Strings Berlin.

Savaloni is pursuing his Doctoral degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland focusing on performance of Schubert’s music on guitar. He’s following Mertz’s model to transcribe more Schubert songs for solo guitar. He’s following similar ideas as Mertz to create idiomatic transcriptions. Additionally, Mertz was influenced by Franz Liszt’s transcriptions of Schubert songs for solo piano which serves as another model. Really nice arched phrasing and clear melodic focus in Savaloni’s playing. Beautiful arranging, especially on Am Meer, with some excellent pianistic balance and expression.
