Exploring the Fretboard No.8: 7th to 12th Frets on Guitar

Playing from the 7th to the 12th Fret, Exercise No.8 from my book Exploring the Fretboard: 100 Exercises for Intermediate Guitar. PDF sheet music with notation, left hand fingering, and video lessons. This book offers students a set amount of ordered material and a variety of ways to investigate the fretboard. It has been designed as an exploratory primer before further and more comprehensive study.

Remember to say the note names out loud. Practice only one exercise at a time for 2-3 minutes a day. Repeat the exercise for a few days even if you can play it first try. This exercise will solidify the 5th and octave for each open string and build some anchor points at the 7th and 12th frets.

  1. Hi Bradford,

I’m wondering if the fret numbers are correct for Exercise 8 in your Exploring the Fretboard book.
It has the D# labeled at the IX fret whereas Ex.9 has the C# labeled at the IX fret.

    Best,
    Diane

    • Yes, it is correct in the book. Position marks indicate the position of the 1st finger in an imaginary “one-finger-per-fret” position. So regardless of what finger in being used it is based on the 1st finger fret number. So in Exercise No.8 it is IX. position with the 1st finger at the 9th fret on C#. In Exercise No.9 it is IX. position with the 3rd finger at the 11th fret on D#.
