Grade 2 Lesson: Moderato by Mertz

This lesson comes from my new book Classical Guitar Repertoire Lessons Grade 2 – Seven pieces at the grade two level with dedicated lessons preparing you for each piece.

Moderato by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) from his Schule für die Guitarre, 1848 – The final piece will focus on musical excitement and a mix of different technical requirements. Practice very slowly with a metronome at first and then gradually work up the tempo one day at a time.

  1. This is a fun piece! The book includes many exercises and explanations but the videos really help me to hear and understand the techniques and “voice” (the feel/musicality, or how the piece affects me) of each piece.
I have noticed, as I advance through the books and revisit the earlier pieces, that I have become more critical of my playing. Or perhaps my listening skills have improved and I notice details now that I could not hear when I first learned a piece. This is progress, I hope.
Thank you, Bradford, for your books, videos, and generous teaching!
