Gavotte (à ma sœur Amanda) by Spanish guitarist and composer Alberto C. Obregon (1872–1922) is a charming work for classical guitar dedicated to his sister Amanda. It is the second piece from Obregon’s Trois Morceaux pour Guitare, a collection that also reflects his connection with guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega with whom he breifly studied with. Written in the style of the traditional gavotte, the piece has a graceful dance character with clear phrasing, elegant melodic writing, and a warm late-Romantic character. The work offers an appealing example of Obregon’s guitar music and makes an excellent addition to the historical classical guitar repertoire.
This piece has a certain flamboyant period charm. It can be satisfying as an intermediate Spanish work with plenty of Romantic rubato and not a strong compositional element other than a pleasing sound and feel on the guitar. Besides some thick chord shapes it is pretty easy once you get to know it. Here’s the YouTube Lesson Link if you want to watch it there.
