These exercises combine finger independence and stretches with a focus on keeping a good alignment in the left hand. Make sure you’ve covered the previous alignment exercises from the book and if you feel and pain or burning stop and rest!
Below is a closer look at the Horizontal Stretch Exercsie

Hi Bradford
Your short discussion of the Assad finger exercises popped up, so I watched it. As always, very helpful.
Yet when I went back to watch it again, I could find it in your list. You emphasized that one should not start with the full exercise, but start with a limited version.
Sounds important. Where can I find it?
Thanks
It’s exactly the same advice for the exercises presented here. Start with strings that are close together and stay with that until it starts to feel comfortable. Then, begin to move to strings further apart and ease into the new amount of stretch. Continue to reexamine your guitar position and body as you go.
