Question: Where do I start when learning classical guitar?
If you are learning classical guitar for the first time I recommend you start with my free Method Book Volume 1 which is the beginning of our structured curriculum. This book is 102 pages long and has videos for each page and exercise providing both information on learning classical guitar but also musical inspiration and discussions for context and practice.
I still firmly believe that studying with a qualified teacher is the best route but technology has been changing making learning online a better and better each year. Plus, with our new Q&A pages you can ask questions or learn from other answers I’ve provided.
If you already play guitar (non-classical) you will likely still want to start with my Volume 1 method. Actually, even if you have some classical guitar training I recommend you start from the beginning to fill any gaps in your learning. Here’s how to do it. Start by integrating my method into your daily playing for just 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll make quick progress and can still have time for your regular material. As you gain confidence with classical guitar studies and reading you can increase the amount to 15-20 minutes and so on. Your mind needs time to adjust to the new concepts and to keep concentration high so introducing it slowly is best.
Upper grades – You can also check out my page: Curriculum for Classical Guitar. This is an outline of the different grades and levels to proceed through along with details on materials needed and practice advice.
Alternatively, if you just need help with something you can find individual lessons and special topics at the Lesson Page. New content gets added constantly to help you learn and clarify student questions. There will even be a fully structured theory section to learn music theory along with your guitar study.
